An Analysis of Engagement Resources in the Sino-American News Reports on the Belt and Road Initiative

The paper analyses the distribution of Engagement resources in the Sino-American media reports on the Belt and Road Initiative. The analysis shows that: (1) The reports of both sides tend to favor the employment of dialogic expansion resources in expressing their own views, leaving room for other different ideas about the B & R Initiative; (2) While the Chinese media quote almost exclusively from authoritative, especially official, sources, the American media often quote from voices of ordinary people most of whom generally hold rather negative attitude towards the B & R Initiative; (3) The media of both sides prefer to use modal auxiliaries as means of dialogic expansion, for the Chinese media to show positive attitudes towards and earnest wishes for the B & R Initiative, and for the American media to cast doubt on the intention or ultimate purpose and the possible consequences of the Initiative; (4) The Chinese media use more deny resources to tone down or suppress negative attitudes towards the B & R Initiative while the American media exploit more counter-expectation resources to raise doubts about it; (5) The Chinese media use more pronounce resources while the American media prefer endorse resources, both to identify themselves with some external voices.
