Emojis were designed in 1998 by Shigetaka Kurita, a Japanese telecommunication employee, in order to make the correspondence between the employees more understandable. However, as a result of advancement of Information and Communication Technology, emojies soon became usable worldwide.These small signs, which enrich the meaning of our articles in electronic messages, enable us to express our feelings and thoughts better. In addition to the facial features expressing our feelings; various objects, symbols, animals and plants arranged in different categories can be used. They have a variety of meaningful forms. These miniscule pictures of the virtual world can also have important functions to create awareness in today’s global issues. Emojis are able to convey non-verbal information to the other party even in situations where communication difficulties are experienced. It can create an effective awareness especially on the social and emotional learning and communication of children in development age. Within the scope of our study, emoji design activities will be organized in various categories between children of ages 8 and 12. In this activity; It was aimed to observe the effects of emojis on expressing emotions and thoughts of children. Also; how children interpret emojis and on the other hand how children use emojis for what they want to tell.
