Fours species of Spanish patriotic songs from 1808 to 1814

France’s invasion of Spain in 1808 started a new escalating phase in the Napoleonic Wars. The subjugation of Spain turned out to be much more difficult than what the French estimated. The conflict in the Iberian Peninsula between the coalition of Spain, Great-Britain and Portugal, and France, lasted almost six years ending with the retreat of French troops from Spain in the beginning of 1814. In addition to the physical acts of warfare, the semiosic ways of interaction played a great role during the war. Journalistic, poetic, and musical texts were used by both sides to rouse the spirit of the combatants. In this presentation a collection of songs of the Spanish side is analysed. Using the Greimas square the material is divided into four species of texts: comic, inciting, suffering, and celebrating. From these species one can proceed to more detailed analysis and criticism of the texts as verbal and musical compositions. The relation of the Spanish text to the texts of the French Revolution is acknowledged. In many cases the revolutionary textual forms serve as models on the level of code – as hypotexts – for the Spanish songs.
